Tow strap breaks and goes through glass

0 Tow strap breaks and goes through glassTrey takes his ram charger through a deep mud hole. Then the wal-mart strap broke and shattered his back glass, cracked the front, and almost hit the passenger. One good reason not to use cheap-o straps! Check out no-nonsense tow strap: http://www.mfrexpress.com/towing-tow-straps-c-24_25.html

    @westernhunter38 …
    @westernhunter38 Those pins are pretty tough. I’ve seen rednecks rip hitches in half, but I haven’t seen a pin break yet. I think those hitches were only class 2/3 tho.
    Class 4′s are tougher. I lent ropes to a stuck 3/4T truck and they pulled from his hitch. It took a dually on SSM16 tires & a 3/4T simultaneously yanking on 2 ropes with 15′ runs to pull him out of the 4′ hole he was in. I thought the hitch would fail, but it didn’t.

    @l337pwnage You’re …
    @l337pwnage You’re right, the pin in the hitch is actually excerted at two points, both sides. A major Oregon based manufacturer of winches and recovery gear replied about the shear strength of their 5/8″ hitch pin. The reply was that their 5/8″ hitch pin was rated to a winch pull strength of 9,500 lbs, but had an actual test break strength of 50,000 lbs. Fine with me since my F-150 has a max weight tow capacity of 9,500 lbs anyway, but a factory installed Class IV hitch rated to 10,500 lbs.

    @westernhunter38 …
    @westernhunter38 One thing I just thought of that I may be wrong on, maybe I’ll ask some engineer friends, is that the single pin is actually seeing shear forces at two independent locations, as opposed to a tow hook with two bolts each seeing shear forces at one location.
    While tensile forces would be cumulative on a bolt, it is possible that shear forces are not cumulative, or fully cumulative. It is possible that this could double the total shear resistance of that single pin in that use.

    @westernhunter38 I …
    @westernhunter38 I agree. This vid is a pretty comprehensive vid:
    /watch?v=vWlcGCzbyLo

    I do not know the shear strength of the pin, but I could take a guess that it is likely grade 5. This is shear strength from a chart for 5/8″ bolts:
    5/8″ gr5= 23,010 #s
    5/8″ gr 8= 27,920 #s
    Keep in mind the pin will only see full load under perfectly linear pulls, any side loading binds the square tubing reducing load on the pin.
    The shackle is stronger due to its 5:1 safety margin.

    @l337pwnage That’s …
    @l337pwnage That’s why I’d rather have my weakest link in the whole setup be the strap itself. Does anyone ever consider what the shear strength of a 5/8″ hitch pin is? On my F-150 I have a Warn Reciever Shackle Bracket in my Class IV hitch that’s held in by the only thing possible – a 5/8″ hitch pin. Although the D shackle is rated at WLL 4 3/4 tons, seems like the hitch pin is the weakest link there. I can’t find any manufacturer that states what the rating/limit of those hitch pins are.

    @RYANBTB Oh, sorry. And thanks for sharing the video BTW. I just wanted to get what happened clear so people can also learn from the video.

    If you watch the vid, you can hear the first cuts in the strap during the first pull, then it lets loose on the second yank.

    I watched a YJ cut his strap 2x on his front bumper trying to pull a CATV truck out of snow. He had no tow hooks.
    I then used my CJ & receiver clevis and strap to his cross member to pull him out.

    @l337pwnage I was videoing, not recovering the ram so i’m not sure why they hooked it up that way.

    @RYANBTB Ok, I got …
    @RYANBTB Ok, I got it now, thanx. The strap was CUT by the bumper and the hook stayed attached to the cut part of the strap because of they way you rigged it. Straps do not recoil like that without a piece of metal attached to them.
    I could imagine someone wrapping an recovery strap around a bumper because recovery straps have no hooks, but the result would be the same except no broken window.
    I have no idea why you wouldn’t use the hook on the bumper or frame if you had a hook, lol.

  11. RYANBTB says:

    @l337pwnage Yes it …
    @l337pwnage Yes it did break, the strap was wrapped around the bumper. It broke the strap but both hooks were still attached.

  12. l337pwnage says:

    The strap didn’t …
    The strap didn’t break, you can see the hunk of metal from the other truck on the dodge’s dash. straps do not have that kind of momentum unless there is a hunk of metal attached to the end. which is why you don’t use straps with hooks.

    amateurs, first of …
    amateurs, first of all the stuck truck should have tried pulling forward a lil after the first movement then after that the strap should have had a counter weight on it so if and when the strap or cable breaks it drops insted of goes flying also the tow straps should never have hooks on them, learn the diff between a tow strap. recovery strap, cable, and kinetic straps NEVER USE TOW STRAPS off road for anything thing more than static pull, when u jerk the line they slip or break and could kill u
